The Proposed Concept and Destination

Franschhoek, nestled in the heart of South Africa’s famed Cape Winelands, is already renowned for its stunning vineyards, exceptional wines, and rich cultural history.

The proposed Franschhoek Cableway hopes to offer visitors an exciting new way to take in the beauty of this region. The cableway has been conceptualised to form a sympathetic and appropriate part of Franschhoek’s unique natural beauty, whilst its ‘slow’ tourism offering will bring economic growth and employment opportunities to all Franschhoek communities.

Planned to offer a breathtaking journey from the base of Franschhoek Pass to the peak of Middagkrans, the Franschhoek Cableway will give tourists a unique aerial view of the valley’s lush landscapes.

Sensitively embedded into Franschhoek landscape

Situated on the scenic Franschhoek Pass, the Franschhoek Cableway will have minimal visual impact on the Franschhoek landscape and surrounding mountains. The initial designs by world-renowned architects have minimised the visual and environmental footprint of the Franschhoek Cableway, and with further consultation we believe the cableway will help showcase Franschhoek’s natural splendour. Inclusive Growth for Franschhoek

The Franschhoek Cableway is set to be a groundbreaking addition to the Cape Winelands, offering visitors an unforgettable experience while contributing positively to the local community. As the first of its kind in the region, the cableway will offer more than just panoramic views; it will be a catalyst for local development and infrastructure upgrades. An investment in sustainable tourism, done sensitively, may be able to arrest the growing unemployment rate in the Franschhoek valley. We are listening

The Franschhoek Cableway is engaging with local communities to understand their hopes and concerns. We are passionate that this is a project by Franschhoek, for Franschhoek and residents will be afforded an extensive opportunity to help refine the scale and scope of project wherever possible.

The project is still in the consultation phase and has not yet filed for any permissions to formally start the process. The design and layout of the top and bottom stations, and the offerings at these stations are still only conceptual. With Franschhoek’s community's constructive involvement, the project developers are confident that in time we can design and operate a world class cableway that will be an asset to Franschhoek. As this project is a major investment into Franschhoek and its communities, the developers are sensitive that the project will only formally commence once there is sufficient consensus on the need, scale and scope of the project. We want to work with the residents in the valley in a responsible manner.

Through extensive and ongoing public participation, we have already heard concerns about potential impacts of traffic, the visual impact of the cableway, and other concerns. Feedback such as this is welcomed and will shape the future of the project. Already our team are looking at ways to reduce potential congestion, including potential private-public partnerships to upgrade existing roads or park-and-ride facilities.
